Louis before his stock as a coach would go down if he remained as the Giants defensive coordinator. Why else would he take a head coaching job in a bleak situationJerry Reese will be looking for some men on defense next year, and he should. He needs guys who can strip the ball, create interceptions, and stop the run. Most importantly, these guys need to show some toughness when it comes to defending.Based on what we have seen for the last several weeks, these guys look over-matched when they play speedy teams, and the Eagles demonstrated that in their two meetings against the Giants this season.Moves need to be made whether it's in the draft or some unheralded trades for this to stop. The Vikings can be seen as an obstacle, but don't look for Brad Childress to use his starters in what will likely be a meaningless game for his club. Then again, Tarvaris Jackson could have some fun in that game, so there's no guarantee. At this point, the G-Men likely will make the playoffs as a sixth seed, and that means playing the NFC Champs at Glendale. Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, and Anquan Boldin will be salivating at that prospect, which will mean one and out for Big Blue.Someone will take the fall for a disappointing season.

Villanova's heading to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) championship game for the first time in the school's history, in no small part due to junior athlete Matt Szczur. Szczur does everything for the Wildcats, including playing wide receiver, running back, quarterback, and handling return duties when called upon.He is essentially everything you'd ever ask for in a team player.Just two short days ago in the FCS semifinals, he was called upon to play running back in hopes that it would spark the Wildcats, who at the time were down to William & Mary. On the same drive he converted a fake punt to keep the drive and 'Nova's championship hopes alive. His athletic play on the fake punt reverse that saw him gain nine yards culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chris Whitney that would ultimately win the game for the Wildcats. On the season, the versatile wide receiver has 47 receptions for 542 yards and four touchdowns. To go alongside that, he's run with the ball 94 times for 654 yards and eight touchdowns.Throughout his three-year college career he's amassed 94 receptions for 1,177 yards and eight touchdowns.Along with his success on the football field, he also plays baseball for the school, starting 47 of the 48 games played by the team last spring. Even with Szczur's athletic prowess, there are some things that are more important than sports, some moments that stand out in everyone's mind whether or not they are a fan of the game, team, or player. He learned in November that he was a perfect match as a bone marrow donor for a one-year-old little girl with leukemia. You, sir, are more than just a game saver; you're a life saver in every aspect of the phrase. Edit: On Monday, December 14th at around 7 PM, I received the following email in my inbox from Matt's parents.Dear Mr. Jenkins, I was searching the web and came upon your article about my son Matt. It was a wonderful article that bought tears to our eyes when we read it. Matt will be doing the blood stem cell transfer on January 4, 2010. The parents of the little girl have elected to to the stem cell instead of bone marrow because it is less painful for their child. Keep up the good reporting i will be checking your articles out from now on. Good LuckKathy and Marc Szczur.. Stafford was going to start for the Lions. How long you could keep him on the bench was correlated on how successful you could be.Sad to say, you never made it out of the preseason. There were several people who thought having you start the regular season would have been more prudent, allowing Stafford to soak up the game on the sidelines the real games, not preseason games where teams don't show you anything. But the Lions' coaching staff sent a message to you, loud and clear: You don't give us the best chance to win the game. The Lions' coaching staff felt Stafford had better command of the huddle and a better connection with his teammates.Daunte, hang 'em up. You don't know it, but you're done. Your body may say it's got a lot of football left and maybe even your brain believes it. But check your heart...it's scared and it shows in your play. Passes completed constantly to your checkdown receivers for short-yardage doesn't move your team well. Limited shots down-field to CJ (he caught four of your passes for a measly 37 yards after having back-to-back 100 yard games). You can play this game with fear but you can't play scared Daunte.Get out of the game before you embarrass yourself any further or get seriously hurt..

This is the first in a series of posts entitled Best World Cup Players Of The Decade. Unfortunately for him, Uruguay scored three and became the first winners of the FIFA World Cup.Uruguay declined to take part in 1934 in retaliation for Italy’s refusal to play in 1930. This left weakened Brazilian and Argentinean teams as South American representatives Lacking any survivors from 1930, Argentina lost to Sweden. Brazil were beaten 3 – 1 by Spain.Italy trounced the US 7 – 1 but needed a replay to overcome Spain in the quarter finals. They eventually beat Austria’s promising team 1 – 0 and Czechoslovakia 2 – 1 to secure their first World Cup success. In 1938, with most of the Austrian wunderteam absorbed into the German squad, the stage was set for another Italian victory. This time they beat their French hosts and the much fancied Brazilians before claiming a second successive title with a 4 – 2 win against Hungary.Because no one player dominated the three tournaments, the choice of Best World Cup Player Of The 1930s goes to a forward who was a member of two winning squads, captain in 1938, and the scorer of 33 goals in 53 internationals from 1930 – 1939, including three during World Cup Finals: Giuseppe Meazza.Let’s leave the final word to Meazza’s coach in 1934 and 1938, Vittorio Pozzo: “He was a born forward. He saw the game, understood the situation, distributed the ball carefully and made the team offense operate.
Having him on the team was like starting the game 1 - 0 up.”The series continues next week with Best World Cup Players Of The Decade Part 2: the 1950s.Now for a round up of the weekend’s World Cup news.Glastonbury is to show England’s World Cup group game against Slovenia on Wednesday 23rd June 2010. The potential first knock out game could also be shown, but you get the impression the spokesperson is bored with the idea by this point.Come the knock out phase, England traditionally say hello to penalties. Here’s a report on the science behind taking penalty kicks. Taking more of England’s penalties under laboratory conditions in empty gyms would seem to be the answer. Here’s “an exclusive peek” inside England World Cup base courtesy of The Times.
